Early in the morning, our driver will meet you at the lobby of your hotel for a transfer by land to San Carlos, the economical hub of the Rio San Juan area. On the way to San Carlos, you will see the countryside landscape and rural areas, mainly dedicated to raise cattle. Transfer time: 4.5 hours approx. Upon arrival in San Carlos, a representative from our company will meet you and take you to the docks where you will board a public boat (1.5 hours ride approx.) that navigates in Lake Nicaragua until reaching the Solentiname Archipelago, a cluster of 36 islands near the southern corner of sprawling Lake Nicaragua with lush vegetation… Dinner will be enjoyed at the hotel. Early morning departure. Leave the archipelago and go the RAMSAR wetland Guatuzos and tropical river Papaturro. This reserve protects 43,750 hectares of wetlands and rain forest. Nicaraguan biologists consider it the cradle of life for the lake, thanks to its importance as a bird nesting site and critical links in the area’s complex ecological chain. More than 12 rivers cross the reserve with the most popular wildlife-viewing river being the Río Papaturro. You will discover the flora and fauna of the Biological Papaturro environment. At the end of the tour, you will return to your hotel to enjoy lunch. Duration: 2 hours approx. ~ Difficulty: Easy Following lunch, we will transfer you back to San Carlos. Once in San Carlos’ docks we will get you in another boat (3 hours ride approx.) that navigates in the Rio San Juan to the small yet historic town of El Castillo, surrounded by nature and witness of many interesting stories of pirates and buccaneers… Overnight at Hotel Luna del Rio 1* for two nights – 1 Standard room. Early in the morning, you will be picked up at your hotel to go to explore the exuberant nature of the Indio Maiz Natural Reserve. We’ll navigate in the Rio San Juan until we reach Indio Maiz Natural Reserve, where we will go for a 2 hours’ approx. hike following the Bartola River. During this visit, you will be ab le to observe a vast variety of monkeys and an enormous diversity of migrating birds, such as eagles, falcons, blue jays, herons, aigrettes among other mammals and frogs. Return to the hotel by boat to enjoy an early lunch. Duration: 3 hours approx. ~ Difficulty: Easy In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing visit to the town of El Castillo. Learn from your local guide about the way of living in this small town. During the tour, you will also visit the El Castillo Fortress, with the impressive name “La Fortaleza de la Inmaculada Concepción de María”. It was built by the Spaniards to protect the city of Granada from the English pirates. Even the famous Lord Nelson tried to conquer it! In addition, enjoy great aerial views of both sides of the river. Make sure to make lots of photographs of this unforgettable place!
