Central America’s largest country, also named “the land of seas and volcanoes”, Nicaragua is full of contrasts: stunning beaches in both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, historical colonial cities founded by the Spanish Conquistadors 500 years ago, large lakes that host hundreds of islands, lush cloud forests, active volcanoes, native villages, folklore, traditions and markets, with humble, warm and welcoming people.
As tourism is still relatively new, the country has a more “authentic” flair than its southern neighbor Costa Rica. Infrastructure is also more limited and challenging although now developing, from rustic Eco lodges to more upscale yet characterful properties, which are now flourishing in the main touristy areas, and new areas are also getting discovered. Where to Go?
Granada, Nicaragua
Granada is a Nicaraguan city on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. It’s home to multiple Spanish colonial landmarks that have survived repeated pirate invasions. The city’s main plaza, Central Park, is dominated by the colorful, neoclassical facade of the Cathedral of Granada, originally dating to 1583.
Managua, Nicaragua
Managua, on the south shore of Lake Managua, is the capital city of Nicaragua. Its cathedral, a shell since a 1972 earthquake, is on the Plaza of the Revolution. Nearby is the tomb of Sandinista leader Carlos Fonseca. The 1935 National Palace of Culture houses the National Museum.
San Juan del Beach
San Juan del Sur is a town on Nicaragua’s southwest coast. It’s known for a string of nearby Pacific beaches, such as Maderas Beach, with its strong-breaking waves, and the quieter Marsella Beach.
