Day 3: Pacuare Lodge - Cabecar Indigenous culture experience

Since time immemorial, the Cabécar Indians – Costa Rica’s largest indigenous group – have lived in harmony with the rainforest in the mountains near the Pacuare River. These indigenous people traditionally live in small family groups scattered across the jungle. Their remote location has helped them to maintain their customs, language and culture. Today you will have the opportunity to experience their way of life in relative comfort and without invading their privacy. The Lodge helped members of a clan that lives in the nearby Nairi Awari Indigenous Reserve to build a typical Cabécar rancho (thatched house), where the son of a local shaman provides visitors with an introduction to his people’s culture and customs. There are two options for visiting the Cabécar rancho. You can start with a moderate, 30-minute hike through the rainforest, which allows you to see some of the flora and fauna that these indigenous people have long relied on. Or you can take a more direct route, which entails a short walk from the Lodge. Breakfast will be served at the rancho, where you will have the opportunity to learn about this ancient culture. This is an easy hike that takes between one and one-and-a-half hours.

Tripadvisor review KateB4066

My husband I and got married back in June 2018 and always wanted to visit Central America, especially Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Therefore we saved hard after our wedding and decided to travel out to this beautiful region over Christmas and the New Year, with 3 weeks in total to play with! We looked at numerous companies of whom to travel with, with the main aim of our funds going to a local travel agent, rather than a big corporate English / US angency. This is when we came across Costa Adventures. From reading through the numerous itinerary’s they had to offer and reviews, we were very impressed with what we saw. We sent an email expressing our interest and what kind of things we were looking to do / achieve whilst away. In no time at all we had Pierre, the company’s main man on the phone talking us through all the options available to us, asking us our interests and trying to gain a feel for what kind of people we were. Whether we wanted an adrenaline packed itinerary, or a more beach and chill out or cultural experience! We decided we wanted todo abit of everything, but loved the fact that they could tailor our honeymoon to what we wanted to do! It wasn’t very long till everything was organised and paid for, which was all hassle free and done via email, which Pierre and Katia (business partners) were very responsive with. On our arrival into Costa Rica, we were very tired after a long time travelling. However following our instructions we managed to find our courier very quickly and safely and got to our first hotel of the trip, welcomed by a wonderful 5 star room, a bottle of wine and a selection of organic chocolate and coffee goodies, of which Costa Rica is famous for! In the morning we set out on our tour, of which took us up into the Mountains and Cloud Forests of Costa Rica, to many of its historic volcanoes and glorious rain forests and lakes. Our transfers were always on time, if not 5 or 10 minutes early every day and everything was booked down to a tee! We trecked, swam, canyoneered, rafted and ate like king and queen! Our transfer across the border across to Nicaragua wasn’t as smooth as we had hoped, but that was our fault travelling so close to Christmas, with everyone (I mean thousands of people) trying to get home to their families! However, we saw this as part of the adventure and again Pierre and Katia were constantly on the phone and liaising with the transfer on the Nicaraguan side to ensure we got through and picked up safely. Nicaragua, we were quite anxious about as we went over during the period of Civil unrest and had read mixed reviews about people’s experiences and safety. However, we needn’t of been! We felt completely safe every step of the way, with everyone being so friendly and thank full for us travelling there! This is a time when they really really need tourists. The economy is so poor and a lot of things are shut up, but this did not hinder our experience! I personally preferred Nicaragua over Costa Rica, due to the fact that it’s less untouched by US commercial tourism and felt that we saw the country as it’s true self! Here again the transfers and guides, in particular Giovanni in Granada and on the Masaya volcano national park trip, were impeccable and just wanted to help and show us what their beautiful country had to offer! We again sunbathed, swam, walked, trecked, eating gorgeous sea water & fresh water fish, witnessing beautiful lakes, volcanoes and cultures! From start to finish we had a fantastic time and loved every second of it! We didn’t even mind spending Christmas and NY abroad away from family and friends, as we were having such a wonderful time! We couldn’t thank Costa Adventures enough and highly highly recommend anyone looking to venture out to this beautiful part of the world, to definitely let these guys do all the hard work of planning an adventure of a lifetime for you ✈️!
